New York is a city of fascinating places. But even in New York, nothing can compare to Chinatown. Nestled in and around Little Italy, Chinatown maintains its own way of life and its own distinctive culture. It is a world generally closed to Europeans.

Falcon returned to New York in late 1999 and remained there till 2002. While working in Soho, he and a co-worker often took lunch in Chinatown. When Falcon returned to the city with JD it was expected that they would continue visiting Chinatown. Though trips to New York have been less frequent, they are still recognized at the Big Wing-Wong on Mott Street.

Working in Chinatown isn't easy. We don't belong. We stand out. It takes time and patience to blend into the white noise of cars and voices and people. Most of these photos were created on days that began just after dawn and ended when the last shops closed.

None of these photos were stage. They are all "real". Part of a series called "Scenes from the Life of a City," they document a world few of us ever see or experience but which captures the essence of the city we call New York.
